Camera Strap Mounts

When it comes to leather camera straps and camera mounts, they come in all shapes and sizes. So, how do you choose the right camera strap for your camera? It's a great question, and in this guide, I hope to provide you with all the information you need to make an informed choice and get the perfect Bowman Leather camera strap.

Mounts, connectors, attachment points, or whatever term you prefer, come in several different varieties. However, there are two main types that I will discuss below.

Lug Mounts

Lug mounts are small metal lugs that protrude from the side of the camera and are typically used with split ring (or keyring) types of attachment. However they are also suitable for Peak Design anchors. They can also be referred to as ‘round’ or ‘ring’ mount. This is typical on most Nikon, Fuji, Sony, Leica, Olympus, Hasselblad and most vintage cameras but there are some exceptions to this! See the table at the end for more information. So if your camera has lug mounts then all my current leather camera straps will work perfectly.

Please note that there is a small possibility that the lug holes can be rough on some cameras. This means that if you use string connectors (like Peak Design Anchors) there is chance that it could cut through the fabric. Not something that you want to happen! My advice here is to check to see how smooth it feels and to file it down if rough and possibly even test with a scrap piece of string.

Flat Mounts

Flat mounts are long thin metal loops that have a rectangular shaped hole in the middle. They can also be called ‘slotted’ or ‘rectangular’ mounts. Flat mounts are typically found on Canon cameras and some entry level Nikon cameras. They are designed to allow a flat strap to be passed through the hole and they are generally not compatible with split rings (they are in the wrong orientation!).

Flat mounts are also ideal for Peak Design Anchors and you can find these straps in my Quick Release collection. Simply pass the cord through the loop and double it back over itself to form a tight loop.
