How To Break In A Leather Camera Strap

Here at Bowman Leather, I only use vegetable tanned leather because of its many superior qualities to chrome tan leather and from a sustainability aspect its far superior. Its natural, strong and It even smells amazing! Give it a sniff if you don’t believe me. The one caveat to this is that, due to the natural curing process, veg tan leather can sometimes be a little stiff at first. This is nothing to worry about, it will soon soften up without becoming fragile!

I have helped ease this process with my option to customise comfort levels, which will allow you to get a broken in feeling out of the box. However, if you choose the classic range, or want maximum comfort as soon as possible, here are some tips and tricks you can try to speed up the process. Remember, despite the extra effort, veg tan leather will pay you back in dividends with its durability.

What Is ‘Breaking In’?

The process of breaking in your camera strap involves softening the edges and relaxing the fibres. This will happen naturally with time but can also be speed up following the steps listed below. If you would like to skip the step of breaking in the edges of the strap, opt for the comfort plus option as the edges are rounded and polished smooth.

Flex and bend

Leather products age beautifully with use so don’t be afraid to flex and bend your strap. Do this throughout the length of the strap, folding your strap in both directions.

Pull and stretch

Hold your camera strap with two hands and use your thumb to apply pressure whilst pulling down the full length.

Soften and Protect - Leather balm

Containing beeswax, cocoa butter and sweet almond oil, my all-natural leather balm will work wonders in softening your camera strap. Massage in the leather balm on the smooth side. Once the balm has penetrated, flex and bend and pull and stretch the strap to soften it up. Not only will this help speed up the breaking in process but the bees wax will help protect it from the elements.
